nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up (Canada) directed by Dr. Tasha Hubbard (Cree) won the The Audience Choice Award – Feature Film, along with a $1,000 cash prize presented by Air Canada, at the 20th imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, which ran October 22 to 27, 2019 in Toronto.

nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up follows Colten Boushie’s family in their quest for justice after he was shot and killed by farmer Gerald Stanley. Dr. Tasha Hubbard tries to make sense of Stanley’s acquittal while reflecting on raising a young Indigenous son on the Prairies where it all happened. nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up also received The Sun Jury Prize at the imagineNATIVE Awards Presentation on Sunday, October 27.

nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up Trailer

In addition to the Audience Choice Award for Feature Film, imagineNATIVE introduced an Audience Choice Award for Shorts this year. The Audience Choice Award – Short Film, with a $1,000 cash award supported by Via Rail, went to Nancy from Now On (Aotearoa, New Zealand) directed by Keely Meechan (Iwi Whakatohea). Nancy From Now On is the tale of a young Māori man with a burning desire to become a drag queen.
